frequently asked Questions

  • What vaccinations do you need?

To ensure a safe and comfortable environment, all pets must be vaccinated against rabies and wait at least 48 hours after each vaccination before being accommodated. Proof of rabies vaccination is required in writing. The waiting time will help ensure that your pet does not experience pain at the injection site, which could lead to restlessness or lethargy. This waiting period is also to avoid stress for pets who may experience unexpected allergic reactions to vaccines/vaccinations. Puppies and kittens between 8 weeks and 4 months (3 months in Indiana) can be cared for in the salon without vaccinations. In New York City, an additional 6 months of Bordetella and DHPP adenovirus is required. In Iowa, DPP with adenovirus is required. Proof of city license is required in Connecticut. Please note: All pets must be in good health before receiving grooming services.

  • How do I book a beauty appointment online?

At the top of the screen you will see "Click to book or view prices". Depending on your pet, choose a dog or cat icon. Choose a race and age. Then click on "Show price". The grooming salon menu on the right side of the screen shows estimated prices for all the services that will be provided for your pet. After selecting a service you will be taken to the service login page to proceed with your booking. You'll be prompted to sign in or sign up for your PetSmart account and provide your name, pet information, and email address to get started. You can book your favorite pet stylists, check availability, make appointments and sign up to receive SMS alerts.

  • Do I have to make an appointment beforehand?

Scheduling an appointment early will ensure that you and your pet don't wait any longer than necessary. Weekends are usually particularly busy, so reservations on Saturdays and Sundays are highly recommended. We are happy to accept appointments if places become available. Please Note: All cat services require specially trained staff, are not available on weekends and are only offered at select salons. Call your salon ahead of time to make sure a certified cat groomer is available.

  • How do I get paid for pet grooming appointments?

Basic package prices are based on breed, coat condition and years of service. To get an estimate before your appointment, we recommend booking an appointment online or calling your salon.

  • What is the Look Great Guarantee?

That's our promise to you, you will love how your pet looks after your visit to our salon or we will do everything we can to make it right.

  • How long do nursing services last?

The amount of time it takes for grooming varies by breed and service, but you can usually allow 3-4 hours. A rush service can be arranged upon request to reduce service time. Minor services such as manicures take approximately 15 minutes and do not require an appointment (subject to salon availability). There may be waiting times. Express service is available for senior dogs and dogs that are anxious during grooming and is required by the following breeds: French Bulldog, English Bulldog, Pug, Boxer and Boston Terrier. Please contact your beautician for details.

  • Is your kennel dry for a dog?

We choose the right drying method for each pet based on a variety of factors including hair type, breed, age and behavior. We do not breed brachiocephalic dogs or cats. For these pets, we dry in the kennel and have special kennel dryer safety procedures to ensure the safety of the pets. We do not use kennel dryers with heating elements. All of our dryers are equipped with automatic shut-off timers, and we often combine multiple drying techniques to minimize drying time. If you have any questions about our policies or would like to discuss the best drying process for your dog, be sure to contact your groomer when scheduling your dog grooming appointment.

  • Will my pet be housed in the kennel before/after the groom?

Yes, pets are cared for in our state of the art kennels and water is always provided. We try to minimize time in the kennel and someone will be checking on your pet at all times. Express service is available for senior dogs and canines that experience anxiety during grooming service. Breeds that require courier service (French Bulldog, English Bulldog, Pug, Boxer and Boston Terrier) spend little or no time in the kennel. Please contact your beautician for details.

  • Can I stay and watch the pet care?

Yes, our grooming salon has a viewing area where you can comfortably watch your dog or cat grooming. However, for the safety of our pets, we do not allow pet owners to assist with grooming or to be in the kennel or bathing areas.

  • Will my pet be sedated?

We never sedate pets and do not accept sedated pets. If your dog or cat is known to have a strong behavioral response to grooming or bathing, please let us know at the time of the appointment and drop-off. If the pet is really uncooperative or uncomfortable during the process, we can end the session - but we will never sedate your pet.

  • How Much Training Do Beauty Salon Employees Receive?

We ensure that every professional pet groomer is qualified to take care of your pet. Academy-trained stylists have completed over 800 hours of hands-on instruction and safety certification, working with at least 200 dogs of all breeds and sizes. Because we pride ourselves on having the highest safety standards in the industry, PetSmart requires every salon employee to pass safety certification annually.

  • How can I be sure to offer the best service?

Upon check-in, a safety-certified salon assistant will conduct a comprehensive hands-on pet assessment to meet your pet's unique needs. During this examination, we examine your pet's skin, coat, ears, claws and teeth to tailor the service to your pet.

  • Can a groomer treat my dog for fleas and ticks?

PetSmart Grooming Salon is proud to present the FRONTLINE® Plus. The solution can be purchased from our store and taken to the salon for application, or you can purchase the Flea & Tick Pack and we will deliver the FRONTLINE® Plus solution to your pet. If you are looking for a more natural option, Only Natural Pet flea and tick repellent is now also available in our grooming salon! Please note: FRONTLINE® Plus is not available in New Jersey, New York, Indiana or Canada. Consult your salon for more treatment options in these areas.

  • Do you offer express service for specific breeds?

We only offer expedited service for the following breeds: English Bulldog, French Bulldog, Pug, Boxer and Boston Terrier (and any mixes containing these breeds). These particular breeds are more likely to have breathing difficulties, especially in unfamiliar environments, and for some dogs this includes places like grooming salons.

Our standard for these breeds is uninterrupted service from dedicated grooming specialists, limiting the time your pet spends in the salon. Your pet will be returned to you once the groom is finished, so we ask that you remain in or near the shop during your pet appointment.

  • What do you look for when checking in my pet?

At check-in, a safety-certified salon assistant will conduct a hands-on assessment of your pet, from teeth to tail. We will closely monitor pets for any of the following combinations:

    • lethargy
    • Excessive panting
    • Excessive drooling
    • tremors or tremors
    • Red eyes
    • Refusing to enter the salon or go into the kennel area

If your pet exhibits any of these behaviors, we are unable to provide service at this time. Pet parents are welcome to stay in the store with their pets and see if the behavior goes away after 15 minutes. If not, we are happy to reschedule the appointment to a less busy time or recommend a vet who can provide services.

  • What should I do to prepare for my pet's groom?

    • Know Your Pet's Triggers:A salon can be a noisy place, which can make some pets nervous. For example, some pets may feel uncomfortable around other pets or when exposed to loud noises such as barking. Be sure to share any stress triggers and calming techniques with your esthetician.
    • Visit the salon:Visit the grooming salon a few days before your appointment to introduce your pet to the groomer. This will also help them get used to the salon's activities, smells, and sounds. You can help him prepare for grooming by stroking his paws during play, getting him used to having groomers treating his paws, and using common household items like an electric toothbrush to introduce him to the hum of clippers and nails and vibrating to get used to grinding machines.
    • Health and well-being:Brushing or bathing your pet at home or by a professional groomer about every four to six weeks will keep your pet happy and healthy, and they will be checked regularly for abnormalities such as ticks, fleas, and dry patches or problems with their nails, teeth, ears, and Eyes.

Pets that have recently been vaccinated, have active infections, or have pre-existing medical conditions are at a higher risk of injury from stress. Older pets, pets with special challenges, and pets who have recently experienced stressful life changes or injuries are at greater risk of stress or aggravated grooming conditions. Be sure to report any special circumstances to your beautician and note all relevant information on the salon card provided.
