Translation by:
doctor Mustafa Khattab, the clear Quran
Blessed be He in whose hand is the kingdom, and He is able to do all things.
Tabārakal-lażī biyadihil-mulk (u), wa es 'alā kulli syai'in qadīr (un).
Blessed be He in whose hands all authority rests. And He is the Most Capable of all.
He who created death and life to prove to you which of you is the best in deeds, and He is the Mighty, the Forgiving.
Allażī is the creator of the wal-ḥayāta universe, and He is the source of all goodness.
˹He is the One who created life and death to test which of you is the best in works. And He is the Almighty, the Forgiving.
The one who created the seven heavens one by one. What you see in the creation of the Merciful to lose it, so return the vision. Do you see any breakfast?
Allah is the creator of heaven, mā tarā fī khalqir-raḥmāni min tafāwut(in), farji'il-baṣara hal tarā min fuṭūr(in).
˹He is the One who created seven heavens, one above the other. You will never see any imperfections in the creation of the Most Compassionate One. So look again: do you see any flaws?
So return your vision twice, and your vision will return to you in despair and will be sad.
Ṡummarji'il-baṣara is the characteristic khasi'aw of ilaikal-baṣaru.
Then look again and again: your vision will come back frustrated and tired.
Indeed, We adorned the lower heaven with lamps and turned them into stonings for demons, and prepared for them the punishment of Burning Splendor.
Wa laqad zayyannas-samā'ad-dun-yā bimaṣābīḥa wa ja'alnāhā rujūmal lisy-syayāṭīni wa a'tadnā lahum 'ażābas-sa'īr (i).
And, verily, We adorned the nether heaven with lamps ˹like stars˺ and made them ˹like projectiles˺ to stone the ˹hearing demons˺, for whom we also prepared the torment of Radiance.
And for those who do not believe in their Lord, it is a punishment from Hell, and the fate is miserable.
Wa lil-lażīna kafarū birabbihim 'ażābu jahannam (a), wa bi'sal-maṣīr (u).
Those who do not believe in their Lord will suffer the punishment of Hell. What a bad fate!
When they are thrown inside, they hear her inhale as it bubbles.
Iżā ulquū fīhā sami'ū lahā syahīqaw wa hiya tafūr (u).
When they are thrown into it, they will hear its roar when it overflows,
He almost discerns with rage, every time a regiment that asks them is launched against him.
Takādu tamayyazu minal-gaiẓ(i), kullamā ulqiya fīhā faujun sa'alahum khazanatuhā alam ya'tikum nażīr(un).
almost bursting with rage. Each time a group is thrown into it, its guardians ask them, "Didn't a teller come for you?"
They said, "Yes, an alerter has come to us", but we denied it and said, "Allah has not sent anything. You are in great error."
Qālū balā qad jā'anā nażīr(un), fa kajzabnā wa qulnā mā nazzalallāhu min syai'(in), in antum illā fī ḍalālin kabīr(in).
They will answer: “Yes, a warner came to us, but we denied him and said: 'Allah has not revealed anything.' You are extremely rebellious.'”
And they said, "If we had listened or reasoned, we wouldn't have been Blaze's mates."
Wa qālū lau kunnā nasma'u au na'qilu mā kunnā fī aṣḥābis-sa'īr(i).
And they will lament, "If only we had listened and reasoned, we wouldn't be among the residents of Blaze!"
Then they confessed their sin, shame on them!
Fa'tarafū bizambihim, fasuḥqal li'aṣḥābis-sa'īr(s).
And so they will confess their sins. So off with the residents of Blaze!
Those who fear their Lord in secret will have forgiveness and great reward.
Innal-lażīna yakhsyauna rabbahum bil-gaibi lahum magfiratuw wa ajrun kabīr (un).
Indeed, those who revere their Lord without seeing him will have forgiveness and a great reward.
Hide your speech or make it loud. In fact, He is omniscient.
Wa asirrū qaulakum awijharū bih(ī), innahū ‘alīmum biżātiṣ-ṣudūr(i).
Whether you speak in secret or openly, He certainly knows best what is "hidden" in the heart.
He does not know who created him, and He is the Subtle, the Conscious ࣖ
Alā ya'lamu man khalaq (a), wa huwal-laṭīful-khabīr (u).
How could He not know His own creation? For He ˹alone˺ is the Most Subtle, the All-Knowing.
He is the one who made the earth subject to you, so walk among its slopes and eat its provision, for He is the resurrection.
Huwal-lażī ja'ala lakumul-arḍa żalūlan famsyū fī manākibihā wa kulū mir rizqih(ī), wa ilaihin-nusyūr(u).
He is the one who paved the earth for you, so move through his regions and eat from his provisions. And to Him is the resurrection ˹of all˺.
Have you ever believed in the heavens that the earth will swallow you?
A'amintum man fis-samā'i ay yakhsifa bikumul-arḍa fa'iżā hiya tamūr(u).
Are you sure that He in the heavens will not make the earth swallow you up as it shakes violently?
Or did you believe in the heavens that He will send you a calculator so you will know what a teller is?
Soy amintum man fis-samā'i ay yursila 'alaikum ḥāṣibā(n), fa sata'lamūna kaifa nażīr(i).
Or are you sure that He who is in heaven will not hurl a hailstorm at you? Only then would you know how "serious" my warning was!
And those before them had denied them, so how did he rebuke?
Wa laqad kazzabal-lażīna min qablihim faikaifa su nakīr (i).
And certainly those before them denied ˹too˺, so how stern was My reply!
Have they not seen the birds above them in ranks, and none hold them but the Merciful One, who is the Seer of all things?
Awalam yarau ilaṭ-ṭairi fauqahum ṣāffātiw wa yaqbiḍn(a), you will be blessed with illar-raḥmān(u), innahū bikulli syai'im baṣīr(un).
Did they not see the birds above them, spreading and folding their wings? No one sustains them except the Compassionate One. In fact, He sees everything.
Is this one who is a soldier for you who will help you beyond the All-Merciful? In fact, unbelievers are just deceived.
Am man hāżal-lażī es jundul lakum yanṣurukum min dūnir-raḥmān(i), inil-kāfirūna illā fī gurūr(in).
Furthermore, what ˹powerless˺ force will come to your aid instead of the Most Compassionate One? In fact, unbelievers are just “lost” in the deception.
Is this the Provider who withholds His provision?
Am man hāżal-lażī yarzuqukum in amsaka rizqah(ū), bal lajjū fī 'utuwwiw wa nufūr(in).
Or who will provide for you if He withholds His provision? In fact, they persist in arrogance and aversion to the ˹truth˺.
If one walks upright in a straight path
Afamay yamsyī mukibban ‘alā wajhihī ahdā ammay yamsyī sawiyyan ‘alā ṣirāṭim mustaqīm(in).
Who is ˹correctly˺ guided: the one who crawls upside down or the one who walks upright on the Straight Path?
Say: He is the one who created you and gave you hearing, vision and understanding, little is what you give thanks for.
Qul huwal-lażī ansya'akum wa ja'ala lakumus-sam'a wal-abṣāra wal-af'idah (ta), qalīlam mā tasykurūn (a).
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “He is the One who brought you into being and gave you hearing, sight and intellect. ˹Yet you barely say thank you.”
Say: It is He who scattered you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered.
Qul huwal-lazī zara'akum fil arḍi wa ilaihi tuḥsyarūn (a).
˹Say also: “It is He Who scattered you ˹throughout all the earth, and to Him you shall be gathered ˹all˺”.
And they say: When will that promise be, if you are true?
Wa yaqūlūna matā hāżal-wa'du in kuntum ṣādiqīn (a).
˹Yet˺ they ask ˹believers˺: “When will this threat be fulfilled, if what you say is true?”
Say, "Knowledge is of God alone, and I am but a clear warning."
Qul innamal-‘ilmu ‘indallāh(i), wa innamā ana nażīrum mubīn(un).
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ "This knowledge is from Allah alone, and I was only sent with a clear warning."
Then, when they see him coming, the faces of those who did not believe will fall, and it will be said: This is what they used to ask for.
Falamma ra'auhu zulfatan sī'at wujūhul-lażīna kafarū wa qīla hāżal-lażī kuntum bihī tadda'ūn (a).
Then, when they see the torment approaching, the faces of the unbelievers will darken and they will be told, "This is what you said would never happen."
Say, "Have you ever thought if God destroyed me and those with me, or if we had mercy on them? Who will protect unbelievers from painful punishment?"
Qul ara'aitum em ahlakaniyallāhu wa mam ma'iya au raḥimanā, famay yujīrul-kāfirīna min 'ażābin alīm (en).
Say, ˹O Prophet, ˺ “Consider this: if Allah kills me and those who are with me or shows us mercy, who will save the disbelievers from painful punishment?”
Say: "He is the Merciful One. We believe in Him and trust in Him. Then you will know who is in manifest error."
Qul huwar-raḥmānu āmannā bihī wa 'alaihi tawakkalnā, fasata'lamūna man huwa fī ḍalālim mubīn(in).
Say: “He is the Most Compassionate; In Him we ˹only˺ believe, and in Him we ˹only˺ trust. You will soon know who is clearly lost.
Say, "Have you ever considered that your water has turned cloudy? So who can bring you specific water?"
Qul ara'aitum em aṣbaḥa mā'ukum gauran famay ya'tīkum bimā'im ma'īn (en).
Say: “Consider this: if your water sank ˹into the earth,’ then who else could bring you running water?”
